Following old Route 7 for a leisurely country drive, you come across The Beautiful South restaurant. This is a lucky find for those of you who just stumble across it and it is a wise choice for those of you who purposely set out to dine at The Beautiful South. Not only have you found a place where the food is fresh and homemade and just plain wonderful, you have found a place where the owners make you feel like you’ve come home.

Harry and Penny Stringos, along with their sons, John and Adonis, know how to make a place that feels as comfortable as dining in a friend’s home. This is a family affair and before long, you will feel like a family member too. Harry and Penny have been making food for their customers (alias new friends and new family members) for a long time – 30 years to be exact. They bought the old Kashway General Store back in 1988 and restored the old supermarket and added on to it to make The Beautiful South. They opened in 1989. Having originally hailed from Greece, Harry and Penny are known for their skills in the kitchen. Harry, who for 10 years served as chef and owner of The Olympic Flame restaurant in Herndon was known for his famous continental cuisine and he was regularly reviewed in The Washington Post. Penny is the one who makes all those wonderful desserts including the famous "beautiful brownie". I can’t tell you exactly how it is made but I will give you a hint. It has a chocolate brownie, chocolate sauce, lots of whipped cream and ice cream. It also has an addictive quality so consider this your warning!

The Beautiful South serves up Continental and American cuisine. Don’t forget to try Harry’s fresh baked Greek bread or Penny’s baklava – it’s the best! They also sell fresh seafood including Maine lobster (delivered fresh from Maine). And on Sundays, the brunch includes Harry’s famous eggs benedict, omelets to order, Belgium waffles and all the traditional brunch trimmings. At the Hamilton Tavern you can gather with friends in a casual and congenial atmosphere or relax on the deck as the sun sets over the Blue Ridge. Enjoy the light fare menu which includes daily specials, sandwiches, homemade pizza and more. The Beautiful South also can accommodate weddings and banquets ranging from intimate gatherings of 40-50 people in private rooms to parties of 200.

The tavern has a "Cheers" atmosphere where everyone knows your name. And before long, Harry and Penny and John and Adonis will know your name. It’s just how they operate. They welcome you with open arms and you can’t help but want to come back "home" time and time again. So, when you make your way over to The Beautiful South, be prepared to join a new family and bring an empty stomach – you’ll need it. The restaurant is open everyday 11am-11pm.
